Line-up

- Julien Vallespi / vocals

- Quentin Benayoun / keyboards, piano & programming
- Julien Negro / bass
- Mickael James / drums, percussion

Progarchives:

"...This French quintet from Nice began covering bands such as SPOCK’S BEARD and MARILLION as well as the heavier RUSH and DREAM THEATER, influences that pop up on their eponymous album, released in 2002. The band consists of highly skilled musicians with instrumental chops to spare such as guitarist Laurent James, a disciple of Frédéric L’épée (SHYLOCK, PHILHARMONIE), whose jazzy lines will remind you of John Goodsall from BRAND X. The other members are keyboardist Quentin Benayoun, drummer Volodia Brice, bassist Julien Negro, and frontman Julien Vallespi who sounds a bit like Gary Chandler of JADIS and sings in a totally unaccented (American) English.

Their album shows a typical American approach to composing, with light-jazz sounds that give the music a bit of a “lounge” or “easy listening” feel. Simultaneously complex and catchy, intricate yet accessible, their pieces are a refreshing mixture of fusion, hard prog, melodic prog and some metal, all gelling naturally. Not the most challenging type of music by any means but complex enough to stand repeated listenings, and surprisingly mature for a first effort, thanks to the excellent musicianship from the entire crew and a top-notch production.

Particularly recommended to art rock fans who appreciate high technical proficiency. Could also please JADIS fans, although the LORD OF MUSHROOMS’ style is much more complex..."

Line-up

- Nick Barrett / guitars, vocals
- Clive Nolan / keyboards, vocals

Progarchives:

"...Since a long time Nick Barret and Clive Nolan are both members from known neo-progressive rock band Pendragon. After the release of the LP The Jewel (1985), Nick called his old friend Clive Nolan who was now living in Egham, Surrey to see if they could stay with him whilst doing the rounds of the record companies. Clive Nolan and Nick had been friends since the age of 4 when they started school together. Although Nick was aware that Clive played keyboards he also thought he would be too busy with other commitments so hadn't asked Clive about joining Pendragon. On one of the trips to London they sat up talking, and Nick asked Clive if he knew of any keyboard players... "I'll do it!!!" said Clive, and so at last a line up that would endure the sometimes still turbulent road that would follow! Nicholas "Nick" John James Barrett Date of birth: 8th June 1961. First got into music: when he was about four year old. His mum used to play Beethoven all the time and always had Radio 2 on playing the Beatles, Andy Williams, etc. First record bought: er.. he didn't buy them, just borrowed his sisters, but the first single he ever bought was probably either "Metal Guru" by T. Rex or "10538 Overture" by the Electric Light Orchestra. Most influential album: Pink Floyd "Dark Side Of The Moon" blew him away and still does. Favourite Pendragon song: "Green Eyed Angel" [Not Of This World]. Clive Ashley Nolan Date of birth: 30th June 1961. First got into music: his parents were music teachers, so he started playing piano at the age of three, then violin at the age of eight, the went on to get a music degree at University. First record bought: "Danse Macabre" by Saint-Saens, which is a symphonic poem, part of a collection of music which I bought when I was eight. Most influential album: "Seconds Out" by Genesis was the album that made me want to be in a rock band. Favourite Pendragon song: "2AM" [Kowtow] and "We'll Go Hunting Deer" [The World]. The Barrett/ Nolan acoustic live Dvd is now here and copies are available from the store. It's an acoustic DVD filmed by a TV crew in Theatre Wyspianskiego in Katowice, Poland in June 2005. The show was as a support slot to Gordon Haskill, [great jazz guy!] so you'll understand why most of the audience look like something from a Tory Party conference! The quality is great and for just a 2 piece band shows off some pretty nifty camera work and a wide spectrum of material. The whole thing is recorded for all regions, on NTSC [most UK PAL players will play this format no problem!] Also it's 5.1 sound mix, so hopefully it will fee like you are really there! Nick and Clive had a lot of fun doing these shows and even joined in 'the apres gig disco' in Gydnia.... Nick B - "So why A Rush Of Adrenaline? Well, I got the title thinking about the fact that an acoustic set was probably about as laid back as you can get, and not exactly an adrenaline fuelled full blown rock band onslaught! So my element of irony became personified in the title.... but then, when Clive and I had done the first of the acoustic shows in Poland and a guy came up to me and said "Neeeck, I have never seen so much passion in an acoustic set!"....my slightly sarcastic DVD title seemed to lose its puff!! Well, thank God!! Because it was nice to hear such enthusiasm and get a feeling that yes, we could kick butt as an acoustic two-piece! Ha ha. All we needed now was a cover illustration to match. Mmmmm...??? Now let me see?? Ahh...yes how about an old guy in one of those old people's shopping cars doin' a bit of serious motocross... Yes I like it! What's more it fits in with my idea of the whole thing being a bit ironic!! Acoustic sets ... Let the good times roll! "

2005 - K2 "Book Of The Dead"

Track listing

1. Chapter 1 : Infinite Voyage (23:25)
2. Chapter 2 : Mirror to the Spirits (6:54)
3. Chapter 3 : The Edge of Light (7:03)
4. Chapter 4 : Aten (Window of Appearences)(3:22)
5. Chapter 5 : Cloak of Antiquity (5:54)

Total Time: 46:38
Line-up

- Ken Jaquess / bass, keyboards & 10 string acoustic
- Yvette Devereaux / violin
- Shaun Guerin / vocals
- Allan Holdsworth / guitar
- Ryo Okumoto / piano, moog
- Doug Sanborn / drums
- John Miner / additional guitar

Progarchives:

"...A prog fan's dream album and the first REAL prog supergroup since UK!!! Line up includes Ken Jaquess, bassist for LA based Atlantis, multi-instrumentalist and Peter Gabriel sound-a-like Shaun Guerin, ex-UK guitarist Allan Holdsworth, drummer extraordinaire Doug Sanborn, keyboardist/synths player Ryo Okumoto and violinist Yvette Devereaux on a magnificent sounding album of pure progressive rock at its absolute best. K2 sound similar to and as good as anything UK ever did and not that far from classic GENESIS either, with a feel that's firmly rooted in the 70's, while at the same time sounding just incredible. With 5 tracks over forty-six minutes, the band get more than their fair chance to shine, yet the sum of the parts makes a whole that is breathtakingly spectacular. The songs are the best you'll have heard since any number of vintage and classic British 70's prog albums, with a vocal that is pure GABRIEL-esque in terms of its sound, its passion, even its phrasing, and on compositions as amazingly written and arranged as this, it's as close to prog heaven as you'll get.

But that's by no means the whole story - we're talking Holdsworth's guitar work at its most prog-sounding and expressive best, melodic, fluid, flowing and it's like UK all over again. The drumming is every bit as good too, as Bruford or Bozzio, even a mix of the two, while Okumoto & Devereaux provide a sea of synthesizers, Mellotrons and violin, just soaring and flying in ways that will leave you jaw-dropped in admiration and stunned as to the brilliance of it all! The album itself is, in the fine traditions of the best 70's releases, a "concept album", written and arranged by Ken Jaquess. The opening track is a staggeringly fine twenty-three minute epic that will occupy a place by your player for years to come with its fantastic symphonic keyboards intro and many twists and turns along the way, sheer flowing construction and impassioned delivery, making it the 'Supper's Ready' of the new millennium. Everything about this track oozes pure class and quality, but, more than that, the sheer spectacle of hearing the synths, vocals, rhythm section, electric guitar and violin played like THIS, is nothing short of spine-tingling stuff! The 2nd track has an intro that will leave you swearing you've been transported back to the heady days of the 70's, while the main body of the song has a similar effect. The sound swirls all around you and it's like having classic Genesis playing in your living room at times - it's monumental and then some, nearly seven minutes of utter prog bliss. What follows is like a delicious collision of UK and GENESIS with 3 tracks running for seven, three and six minutes, and these just put the icing on the already sumptuous cake.

In short, 'Book Of The Dead' is magnificent - one of the best "seventies prog-rock" sounding albums ever made - and it's only thirty-three years late!!! So worth the wait, you'll want it yesterday! Highly Recommended !!!"

"...STRANGERS ON A TRAIN is another of PENDRAGON and ARENA keyboardist Clive NOLAN's projects and SHADOWLAND'S partner Karl Groom. On this one he is accompanied by Tracy HITCHINGS, the singer for LANDMARQ. Tracy's vocal power perfectly complements the majesty of church organ-like keyboards and soaring electric guitar. The neo prog approach that this trio is known for is evident here.

First released in 1993, STRANGER's second album "The Key Part 2: The Labyrinth" builds upon Part 1's themes. This second of a planned three-album series is truly a masterwork and one of the finest symphonic progressive albums of all time. It must be listened to. Plans were always on the cards for the trilogy to be completed with "The Key Part 3: The Revelation" and this is planned for release later in 1998. (Not recorded yet)..."

"...XINEMA is another interesting addition to the growing number of Prog bands coming across the sea from Sweden. XINEMA is a three piece prog/melodic rock band, and has existed in it’s present form since March -99. Their music can be described as melodic emotional, well played and with a profound intention of making each song a working entity.

The band's motto is: "- A good song is always a good song, regardless of genre." XINEMA takes great pride in their strong musical integrity, and has always done things their own way. This gives at hand that there's no obvious choice when it comes to placing them a specific genre. The guys themselves feels that they are standing with one leg in the melodic/AOR field, and with the other in the progressive realm. This release will please fans of SAGA, ASIA, RUSH and the likes..."

Line-up

- Torben Enevoldsen / guitar, keyboards
- Johan Koleberg / drums
- Mats Olausson / keyboard solos
- Pontus Egberg / bass

Progarchives:

"...SECTION A is a band formed by Torben Enevoldsen, mostly solo guitarist who has worked on his own strictly instumetal albums until 2001 when he decided to record an all-vocal album. He asked Andy Engberg, ex-vocalist of LION'S SHARE, to write lyrics for all his songs and of course sing them. Also, impressed by Andreas Lill's (VANDEN PLAS) drum playing he asked him to join the band. So the three-man band was formed. Derek Sherinian(ex-DREAM THEATER, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) helped with a couple of keyboard solos together with Günter Werno (VANDEN PLAS). The band plays a classic Prog Metal style like DREAM THEATER, SYMPHONY X, and so on but with a little more of a dark style in it.

Their debut album "The Seventh Sign" was released in 2001 and it consists of hard rock riffs together with mind-blowing solos and very nice lyrical themes. Their second album "Parallel Lives" is a concept album about to be released in Europe. It is said that it will define the SECTION A sound.

Of course a band like this one should not be left aside.

For the recording of their second album Andreas Lill was replased by Johan Koleberg (ex-LION'S SHARE). Pontus Egberg (ex-LION'S SHARE) is on bass and Mats Olausson (ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) played on some keyboard solos..."

Progarchives:

"...MECHANICAL POET was born on Spring, 2002 from the ashes of experimental avant-garde metal act GLAZEMAKER, which consisted of guitarist Lex, drummer Tom and lead singer Sebastian. After several years of experimenting and performing very various genres of music the members decided to form an original melodic metal project. In this new band they wanted to unite progressive metal riffs and song structures with deep ambient pads, trance electronics and rich classical orchestrations.

First record of MECHANICAL POET was made on June, 2002. It was an instrumental 9-track demo "Trace Of The Dead Leaf" composed of old GLAZEMAKER pieces that were revised and newly orchestrated. The demo was well appreciated on Moscow underground scene and the trio started to work on their premier EP. From June to August, 2002 Lex and Tom have already composed six new tracks and on September, 2002 occupied the studio to record them. Unfortunately in the middle of the studio session the singer decided to leave the band and the work was incomplete.

Seven months were spent in auditions and endless search of a good singer. The choice was made at the end of April, 2003 after more than 130 auditions. Max became the frontman of MECHANICAL POET and put the final touches at "Handmade Essence" EP. Due to these 4 songs and 2 instrumental tracks the band received several offers from various music companies and finally signed a record deal with italian label Aural Music, the mother company for code666, Dreamcell11, GoreGorecords and Amaranth Recordings.

From the beginning of 2004 MECHANICAL POET have been working on their debut full length CD "Woodland Prattlers". The hard work was complete on September, 2004. The official release date was set on December 4th, 2004..."

Progarchives:

"...ZEN plays prog with a leaning toward prog metal. The music has balance between more melodic prog and driving metal. The Italians have been trying to clone DREAM THEATER with varying degrees of success for the past few years. They definitely show a strong "Images and Word" influence, but with more of a neo-progressive bend. They're not quite as heavy as DREAM THEATER and the keys drive more of the sound than the guitar. The singer is truly an Italian version of James LaBrie. Rather than trying to clone LaBrie's style, he lets some of his accent come through and sounds fantastic in the process..."

ProGGnosis:

"... Imagine Ian Anderson and some other members of Jethro Tull taking a vacation in some rural farm, just before recording Songs from the wood and suffering from a post Minstrell in the Gallery melancholic sickness. Image him attending occasional folklore shows and living in perfect harmony with the calmness and soul healing effect of the green pastures. Imagine the unexpected company of Mark Knopfler, while young, still searching and discovering his distinctive guitar sound, pre-Dire Straits. If you can picture this set, you either have listened to this album already or will have a pretty good idea of how it sounds like.
New Acres has this real rural feeling, just like it was recorded to be listened while in voyage we cross the fields, the woods and the pastures of the most deserted parts of the country. It kindly mixes some folk acoustic sounds with the electric components of 70’s progressive melodic music.
Cees van Aanholt sounds exactly like Ian Anderson, both in his vocal sound and (especially) the way that he sings. And also in his flute kind of play, though the flute parts are comprehensively less than the ones we listen in a Jethro Tull album. His acoustic guitar sounds simply delightful, setting a very harmonious structure upon which his voice blossoms.
The most curious element here is, in my opinion, the electric guitar, which rhythms sound a lot like the earliest works of Dire Straits. Even some Jan van Hout solos sound just like a rough Mark Knopfler version, before Sultans of Swing.
If New Acres and Triangle Tune seem like songs just out of Songs from the Wood. Good Earth’s Wine and Song for Ophillus have a more Heavy Horses sound to it. They all have very beautiful melodic lines, perfect to fill your soul with refreshing and anti-stress thoughts.
In Moment of grief you will clearly discover the Knopfler’s rhythm and solo alike sounds.
The use of female vocals, gently provided by Ester van der Hoorn add some originality to this band. They are very clear and beautiful, enriching songs like Interpretor and Answers. In Homage to Life, only the vocals and the flute approximate Tamalone to the Tullish sound that prevail throughout the rest of the album. This song is much more straight forward in the rhythm department, sounding a lot like early 80’s rock’n’roll.
The acoustic Epilogue has a bitter mood musicality, though the lyrics are pretty much the contrary as they are about hope and strength to carry on. Which, for our displeasure, they didn’t. This is the only work released by Tamalone, leaving us the impression that they could have had a pretty good future, for this album is an enjoyable display of kind and calm sounds.
The fans of the most light, relaxed and simple Jethro Tull songs will appreciate New Acres a lot. So will those who like uncompromising prog, with a very acute harmonious sense..."

Progarchives:

"...A blend of JADE WARRIOR and KING CRIMSON with hints of ÄNGLAGARD, this French group treads everywhere from soothing melodiousness to sudden attacks of metal. Their music goes from free to hypnotic, wild, energetic and electric rock, but also pieces which sound like jazz-rock with a touch of Zeuhl or even melodious pop songs.

Their third effort, "Quarante Jours Sur Le Sinaï" ("Forty Days On The Sinai"), is a conceptual work dealing with Ancient Egypt and old gods....the music is a mesmerizing melange of Mellotron and organ laden dark prog enmeshed with flute, searing guitar runs, Chapman Stick, dreamy female vocals as well as dramatic commanding male vocals (all vocals are in French). There are lots of guest artists contributing a wide palette of musical colors - harp, soprano sax, cello and etherial vocals. At times the music is serene and dreamy and then it explodes with a blazing distortion laden guitar solo. This 66 minute work is a breathtaking experience that echoes classic bands like CARPE DIEM and ANGE. The CD comes with 2 booklets - with translations in French and English outlining the story. An overwhelming work and one of the best symphonic rock albums I've heard in quite some time..."

- Pascal van der Pol / bass, mandoline
- Menno Boomsma / drums, flute
- Bastiaan Peters / guitar, guitar synth
- Jeroen van der Wiel / keyboards

Progarchives:

"...This Dutch prog rock band is rooted in the late Eighties, the prime mover was guitar player Bastiaan Peeters and two American friends on drums and keyboards. In ’87 ODYSSICE released their debut-demo "Track one", a fine blend of RUSH and CAMEL. The future looked bright when ODYSSICE even reached the national radio (the famous live rock-program Countdown Café) and they played on a prog rock festival in Belgium along with NOW, EASTERN WIND and fellow Dutchmen EGDON HEATH in ‘89. The line-up in those days was Bastiaan Peeters (guitar), Bart Kuhne (drums), Erik Aafjes (bass) and Andrae Hubbeling (keyboards). Unfortunately some members were not able to concentrate on the band. The band seemed to belong to the past but in ‘96 ODYSSICE made a mini-CD (four songs) entitled "Moondrive", it has strong echoes from CAMEL (melodic and Latimer-like guitarplay). Bastiaan recruited for this CD Jeroen van der Wiel on keyboards, Pascal van de Pol on bass and Bart Kuhne on drums.

In ’97 ODYSSICE were invited to perform on the Dutch prog rock festival Progfarm. Drummer Menno Boomsma replaced Bart Kuhne, he was too busy with his work and skating (a typical Dutch sport). Their performance was a success and things started to grow for ODYSSICE. In 2000 ODYSSICE released the CD entitled "Impressions", a strong, 24-carat symphonic rock album with echoes from CAMEL but also some ethnic elements. It has very decent sales for an own production. In 2003 "Moondrive" was re-released as "Moondrive Plus" with two bonus tracks ("Losing Her" and "Powerloc") and some extra’s. Meanwhile Pascal van de Pol is replaced by Gijs Koopman (ex-CLIFFHANGER) who’s not only a very good (Rickenbacker) bass player but also skillful on keyboards and Moog Taurus bass pedals. The prog fans are eagerly waiting for a new ODYSSICE album in 2004.

The album "Impressions" is in the vein of the mini-CD "Moondrive" but with more mature and alternating compositions. Jeroen delivers a lush keyboard sound (piano, Mellotron – and Moogsamples) in some songs but the focus is on Bastiaan Peeter with his sensitive guitar play and the use of a guitar-synthesizer (spectacular – and surprising sounds). The progress of this band is emphasized by the integration of ethnic elements from Scotland, China and India, very beautiful and a proof that ODYSSICE is on the way to develop their own sound. I’m sure this album will please a lot of symphomaniacs!"

Progarchives:

"...CARPTREE is a 2-piece band consisting of Niclas FLINCK (lead vocals) and Carl WESTHOLM (keyboards) and also responsible for arrangements and production. They play their own kind of prog/pop music with a very personal and honest touch. Their music can to some extent be compared to some of Peter GABRIEL's works or perhaps MARILLION's later albums but this is only a way to try to give you a picture of how they sound.

CARPTREE’s 2001 self-titled first CD leans a bit more toward progressive-pop than "Superhero" but the potential that is fully realized on "Superhero" is very evident. This is highly enjoyable symph-pop with high emotional impact, superb melodic songwriting and interesting, tasteful arrangements supporting the unique voice of FLINCK. The mix of these ingredients make this a fantastic album! A very strong release, maybe even a future classic. So start with "Superhero" and you’ll probably come back for their 1st CD as well. One of my recent favourite discoveries!"

- Nicklas Barker / voice, guitars, Mellotron
- Anna Sofi Dahlberg / Mellotron, keyboards, voice
- Jan Erik Liljeström / bass, voice
- Peter Nordins / drums, cymbals, Mellotron

Progarchives:

"...Excellent heavy / hard prog band from Sweden whose music is strongly influenced by KING CRIMSON, with outstanding mellotron and cello passages. Dark moods are present all the time in their music where the distorted bass and raw drums are another trademark. Their live performances are outrageous, and those who saw them live at Progfest '94 know what I'm talking about....

"Vemod" is the sublime "Wheel" which features a cornet solo from guest Pär Ekström which strongly evokes CRIMSON circa "Lizard". "Nucleus" is their second album and must be regarded as a classic as well. There are no radical changes in direction. The band has personalized the music a bit more although there are obvious references to The CRIMSON. Definitely one of the best progressive groups in the world.

"Gravity" introduces a newborn ANEKDOTEN. The music has a slightly more atmospheric tension filled style with an ear for detail, a sense for fantastic arrangements, and a superb album as result. A very interesting development and not once did I miss that cello! A definite grower. Highly recommended..."

Total Time: 64:00
Line-up

- Doug Ott / guitars
- Ted Leonard / vocals
- Paul Craddick / drums
- Mike Geimer / keyboards
- Ed Platt / bass

Progarchives:

"...Symphonic Prog Metal band with strong musicianship and very well elaborate compositions. Racing guitar riffs, atmospheric keyboards, driving bass lines, brilliant rhythms and the warm, clear voice of singer Ted LEONARD. These are just some of the intregral ingredients that play a prominent part in the sound of ENCHANT. They remind of DREAM THEATER, FATES WARNING, MARILLION, RUSH, SHADOW GALLERY, STYX & YES, and vocals in the style of KANSAS.

"Break" and "Juggling 9 Or Dropping 10" proved to be their most accomplished record to date. Soaring vocals, powerful melodies and stellar musicianship are once again evident in their abundance on these excellent albums. On the heals of 2002's "Blink Of An Eye" comes 2003"s "Tug Of War". With this album, the band continues to morph and create themselves into progressive monster, but enough to show progress and maybe pick up new fans along the way. The next album could be the one where this band put out their classic. Like a fine wine, they are proving that with age they just keep getting better. ENCHANT is one of the American Prog metal bands to come out of the 90s, and their future promises greatness..."

Progarchives:

"...70's driven symphonic rock, with strong keyboard orientation, specifically Hammond organs a la ELP. Instrumentally, they come from the ELP, GREENSLADE and YES school of thought, and the PINK FLOYD class in the vocal department. They have a superb melodic flow to the music they make, encapsulating real power and dynamics without ever becoming overpowering. Without a doubt, GH remain one of the most popular groups in the progressive rock genre. All the albums are very conceptual, and there is great musicianship overall.

Their first three albums ("Journey Of The Dunadan", "On To Evermore" and "Perelandra") all sold consistently, but it was not until year 2000 when their 4th album "Chronometree" was released that they really started to take off in terms of big sales. This album is a phenomenal, mostly instrumental prog epic into their own wonderful brand of stylish symphonic rock. "Middle Earth Album" is really only for GLASS HAMMER collectors. "Lex Rex" is their new studio album, and it’s the REAL follow-up to "Chronometree". "Lex" is a prog fan’s dream, featuring all their best instrumental sounds and strong vocal arrangements on brilliantly constructed tracks that offer a variety of styles. Recommended for fans of Hammond organ appreciators...

"Shadowlands" combines the legendary talents of prog-icons Steve BABB and Fred SCHENCHEL, the incredible vocals of Walter MOORE and Susie BOGDANOWICZ, a half-million dollar pipe organ, a string section, an arsenal of analog gear, and all the magic that modern recording technology has to offer. GLASS HAMMER's "Shadowlands" delivers everything that modern progressive rock should be: the vintage sounds, the contemporary production, the epic style.

Once more the Hammond screams and the Moog soars! Prog is alive and well; "Shadowlands" is proof. Check out the links below for more information about this astounding new release from GLASS HAMMER."

"...One of the first new prog bands to emerge on the 80's and 90's scene. The music is hard to categorize, switching among many different moods and styles, sometimes with psychedelic influences. Long improvisations, and main influences are OZRIC TENTACLES and KING CRIMSON.

"The Devouring" and "Burning The Hard City" are considered by many to be one of the best prog albums released in the 90s. DJAM KARET have taken their trademark sound of blistering guitar solos, atmospheric passages, and instrumental prowess and added old school prog rock keyboards. The resultant music is a great delight for the guitar fan as well as the adventurous rock listener.
GREAT BAND!!!"

"The Creeping Vine" easily is the most diverse and interesting of all the CYAN releases. The music on this album is even more along the lines of YES, though there's still a lot of Banksian keyboard work that reminds of GENESIS, particularly the synth solos. All of the CYAN albums are easily recommendable for fans of the alleged "neo-prog" genre. Recommended for all Neo Prog fans !!!"

- Chad Neth / the voice
- Jerry Stenquist / keyboards
- Brick Williams / guitars

Progarchives:

"...Formed by guitarists Brick Williams and Jon Shumway, this Utah metal quintet mixes ingredients from DREAM THEATER, FATES WARNING, METALLICA and RUSH. Despite constant personnel changes, they’ve managed to release three relatively decent albums of light metal (light as in ‘not overly complex’) – call them a lighter version of DREAM THEATER if you will. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, they balance old school prog with metal quite well.

“Subconscious” is their most mature and better produced effort. Nearing the 80-minute mark, it consists of three epic tracks with two shorter ones in between, featuring purely progressive passages with metal tinges. You’ll never mistake them for GENESIS or YES, however, as the crew treat the listener to pounding double bass drums and rocking/screaming guitars duelling with the keyboard. Their material moves through a variety of musical patterns, styles and moods, with complex rhythms and sensible lyrics. The vocals are rather mild for this type of music (no grunts or screams) but are quite well done.

Not absolutely essential but could appeal to fans of CLOCKWORK, ENCHANT, KANSAS, MAGELLAN, SHADOW GALLERY or THRESHOLD..."

2. Kontiki
3. Mirror man
4. You are
5. Rememberence
6. Valentinsong
7. Tell
Line-up

- Patric Helje / song
- Reine Fiske / guitar
- Stefan Dimle / bass
- Simon Nordberg / keyboards
- Jonas Lidholm / drums

Progarchives:

"...LANDBERK is one of Swedens darkest bands. Their sound is somber and almost mournful. There is a subtile balance between the Mellotron sounds, the guitar parts and vocals full of melancholy and the rhythms gaps from bass and drums. Evoking KING CRIMSON KING to GENTLE GIANT.

"Riktig Äkta" (Swedish vocals) is an absolute brilliant album and strongly recommend it to fans of the Scadanavian scene. "Lonely Land" features a brave cover version of T2's classic "No More White Horses", and it's an all-round winner! Contrastingly, "One Man Tells Another" steps on to more KING CRIMSON styled realms, like a less complex more direct ÄNGLAGARD. Subsequent albums mellowed somewhat..."

Line-up

- Tarmo Simonen / piano, synth
- Markus Wallasvaara / drums, percussion

Progarchives:

"...nspired by classic prog giants like PINK FLOYD, GENESIS and KING CRIMSON, Finnish band OVERHEAD formed in the late nineties to record, and eventually release their first full version album "Zumanthum". Their music is refined and elegant with well-built melodies, clear and powerful vocals quiet and contrasted parts, sophisticated arrangements and great instrumental parts.

"Zumanthum" consists of 5 songs, including a 20 minute epic, and fits in the Neo Prog style, but with the perfect dynamics of keyboards and guitars, a symphonic sound is achieved. A new band capable of doing great things in the future.

"Metaepitome" (2005) is composed by six long and complex pieces, two of them being suites about 15 and 20 minutes long. The music still includes a few influences from PINK FLOYD, RUSH, MARILLION, DREAM THEATER or KING CRIMSON.

However, OVERHEAD's Progressive rock becomes really innovative and personal, when it's mixed with some strange psychedelic and electronic sequences. The tracks are performed with a power not unlike heavy-metal. The ingredients: Seventies keyboards sounds, lively bass parts, elegant vocals, nice flute soli, excellent guitar playing..."

2004 - SALMON "When The Dust Settles"

Total time: 58:29
Line-up

- Sven de Haan / bass, bass pedals, backing vocals
- Gerrit Hoogenbeen / acoustic & electric guitars, backing vocals
- Jan Jaap Langereis / lead vocals, keyboards
- Michel Nieuwenhuis / drums, percussion

Progarchives:

"...SALMON is an enthousiastic "pur sang" symphonic rock band from the Netherlands with members who are highly influenced by several musical trends. This fact means, SALMON's repertoire consists of two hours authentic and varied sympho rock: in other words dynamic, rhythmic and versatile. You will recognize the influence of symphonic rock from the seventies instantly, next to baroque and classical music from the 18th and 19th century. All this comprises the unique SALMON sound!

SALMON starts off through the renewed contact in October 1997 of keyboard player and lead singer Jan Jaap Langereis and bass player Sven de Haan. They used to be fellow members of an Amsterdam based symphonic rock cover band. A few years and many other bands later, Sven puts an advertisement in a Dutch magazine that specializes in symphonic rock music, called IO-pages. Jan Jaap responded with in the back of his mind the successful collaboration in the past.

After months of so called "attic rehearsals", Henk Sonnenberg joined them. Henk used to be the drummer of the before mentioned Amsterdam based cover band and had remained Jan Jaap's friend over the years. At more or less the same time (May 1998), Jan Jaap spotted an advertisement in a local newspaper in which a "symphonic music-minded" guitarist, Gerrit Hoogebeen, was looking for employment. Contact was made and a few days later the SALMON line-up was complete.

The School of music in Heiloo, where Jan Jaap teaches, was found to be and still serves as a very appropriate venue for the rehearsals. The school was also the place where the name SALMON was decided upon.

The name SALMON stems from the idea that we consider our music to go against the mainstream of nowadays music. As the salmon struggles to swim upstream to find her hatching place, the music of the band SALMON does the same by being averse to the popular tunes we hear today. The musicians approach their music with a non-commercial attitude and refuse to make any concessions as to the end result. Hence the term: swimming against the tide..."

2002 - SIMON SAYS "Paradise Square"

Total Time: 63:26
Line-up

- Matias Jarlhed / percussion
- Jonas Hallberg / guitars, backing vocals
- Daniel Fäldt / vocals, sitar
- Stefan Renström / bass, keyboards, vocals

Progarchives:

"...Here’s another gem from the amazing Mellotron-loaden Skandinavian progrock scene, this time a Swedish band including Mattias Jarlhed (percussion), Jonas Hallberg (guitar and backing vocals), Daniel Fäldt (lead – and backing vocals, sitar) and Stefan Renström (bass, keyboards, voices). Releases: album "Ceinwed" from ’95 and "Paradise Square" from ‘02. Main influence: mid-GENESIS.

The second album is superior to their debut, in my opinion "Paradise Square" is one of the best releases from 2002! Most of the 7 songs are long, alternating and elaborate pieces with lots of surprising ideas: classical guitar and piano, a jazzy intermezzo, sensitive Spanish guitar or sitar and tablas. The 24-carat symphonic sound is very inspired by mid-GENESIS but has also echoes from ANGLAGARD (sumptuous Mellotron waves), SPOCK'S BEARD (shifting moods and fiery electric guitar), MARILLION (keyboards) and MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND (Minimoog flights with pitchbend). The vocals are at some momens a bit theatrical but in general strong and convincing. Funny self-mockery: SIMON SAYS has integrated some musical moments from GENESIS albums ("The Lamb..." and "Foxtrot") but the way they have done this, showcases the mature compositional skills. Recommended..."

The line-up consists of Lars Fredrik Froislie (of WHITE WILLOW)on keyboards, Kristian Karl Hultgren on bass guitar, Martin Nordrum Kneppen on drums, Morten Andreas Eriksen on electric and acoustic guitars and mandolin and Tony Johannessen on vocals. This group is strongly evocative of KING CRIMSON, GENESIS, GENTLE GIANT along with newer symphonic prog bands like ANGLAGARD and ANEKDOTEN with a dash of Scandinavian folk and classical influences thrown into the mix.

Their debut cd WOBBLER "Hinterland" contains long and complex tracks featuring lush, vintage keyboard sounds, making extensive use of Mellotron, Mini-Moog, Hammond C-3 and harpsichord, along with beautiful electric and acoustic guitar playing, a complex rhythm section along with flutes, recorder, saxophones, mandolins and various other instruments providing a very full, symphonic sound.

Highly recommended for fans of the early progressive greats and symphonic prog music..."

Total Time: 58:57
Line-up

- Joost van den Broek / keyboards
- Marcel Coenen / guitars
- Dennis Leeflang / drums
- Rob van der Loo / bass
- André Vuurboom / lead vocals

Progarchives:

"...An impressive Dutch progrock band that teamed up in ’99 with these musicians: Marcel Coenen (guitar), Rob van der Loo (bass and stick), Joost van den Broek (keyboards) and Sascha Burchardt (vocals), she arrives after the first EP. The name SUN CAGED is derived from a song by SIMPLY RED. The new SUN CAGED from 2003 features Marcel Coenen (guitar), André Vuurboom (vocals), Joost van den Broek (keyboards), Rob van der Loo (bas and stick) and Dennis Leeflang (drums), known from WITHIN TEMPTATION, a famous Dutch gothic band. By the way, the young Joost van den Broek stunned many prog heads as a guest musician during the ARJEN ‘AYREON’ LUCASSEN tour last year.

The two mini-CD’s contain not only prog metal-oriented music (like DREAM THEATER and some IRON MAIDEN) but also some jazz and fusion elements. The voice of Sascha is strong and natural and guitarist Marcel (ex-LEMUR VOICE, Dutch progmetal band) shows his skills. The alternating compositions are both complex as melodic, this band has delivered a promising product. After their new CD "Sun Caged" the band is hailed as the Dutch answer to DREAM THEATER but in my opinion this does wrong to the band. In fact I’m more pleased with SUN CAGED because their eponymous CD is not layared with dazzling solos and virtuosic interplay and their singer has not that exaggerating undertone like James LABRIE. The nine compositions often contain spectacular shifting moods with elaborate and tasteful keyboard play, heavy and propulsive guitarwork, powerful vocals and a dynamic rhythm-section. The music features exciting soloing but the emphasis remains on the songs, this makes SUN CAGED sound like a band. This refreshing prog metal deserves international recognition! By the way: the Japanese CD version has a bonus track entitled "Four Guilders"..."

Influences of the band include ELP, GENESIS, PINK FLOYD, YES and so on from 70-s era.

Bonus track
9. Mysterious Extra Track (4:27)

Total time: 01:08:44
Line-up

- Bruce Soord / guitars, vocals
- Nick Lang / keyboards, drums, programming
- Mark Harris / bass

Progarchives:

"...The guitarist of VULGAR UNICORN starts his solo career with this band, which is inspired as much by PORCUPINE TREE as by his old group. PINEAPPLE THIEF has a mix of prog with some space rock. Balance, beauty, and modernity are all to be found in the plush sounds of PINEAPPLE THIEF ... great melodies, songs and plenty of atmospheres. This band will appeal to fans of RADIOHEAD, but other occasional influences show through that are less obvious but apparent (PINK FLOYD, U2, OZRICS and KING CRIMSON).

With their second release, PINEAPPLE THIEF (PTh for short) have reached a state of grace with their frenzy guitar drawings and acoustic sets, using Mellotron to the better effect without ever sounding retro. Indeed, and more than with the two previous albums from PINEAPPLE THIEF, "Variations on a Dream" is brimming over with its creator’s talent and is impressive with its incredible commercial potential. Thus, PTh has elaborated a "double layer album", in which the prog fan will enjoy the fine-tuned production and the arrangements, while the pop rock lovers will be delighted with accessible and addictive songs. This is the type of CD that one plays over again as soon as it ends. A little miracle of balance, and a place in my Top 5 for 2003.

Highly Recommended..!"

Special Guest:
- Mark Rabuck backing vocals, synthesizers cello

Progarchives:

"...AKACIA is a progressive rock band that have never been afraid to play the best rock music, they are a group that simply do not sound as any another band, they follow the same musical line from the bands like GENESIS, YES, EL&P and KING CRIMSON. The musicians of the AKACIA use the common instruments found in any famous band, that they are the guitars, the keyboards, the drums and also the voices, very impressive musically and also lyrically, but in some passages, sometimes the arrangements are very complex, and in others parts are very simple.

Their music is heavy and very solid, also very gentle, also very soft, these kinds of the arrangements were easily found in the bands of years 70, a world that the listener has a feeling that we returned to the past. You can bet, AKACIA is certainly one of the most enjoyable bands that I will have ever the pleasure to listen to. Excellent and highly recommendable to all progressive rock fans..."

Total Time: 38:09
Line-up

- Damon Fox / keyboards, guitar, vocals
- Andrew H.M. Jones / guitar, piano, vocals
- Richard Anton / bass guitar, vocals
- Steve Frothingham / drums

Progarchives:

"...This California trio offers unashamed retro hard rock with heavy use (and abuse) of growling Hammond organ, fat, juicy, heavy guitar riffs, plodding, booming bass, multiple mellotrons and lots of other unmentionable keyboard artefacts. With its mix of pop, glam and prog rock elements, their music features aggressive experimental passages with the dark, psychedelic sound of early 70's metal combined with elements from the 90's. The band consists of vocalist/keyboardist Damon Fox (a terrific vocalist who prefers a moderate range to banshee wails or toadlike croaking); Ace Mark on lead, rhythm and slide guitars; Duffy Snowhill on bass; and Steve "Froth" Frothingham on drums and gong.

Their first EP, "Closer to Doom", was recorded in Hollywood in 1998. Apart from the production, this could have been recorded in 1973: nothing over six minutes, genuinely good songs with BEATLES-like melodies and harmonies, heavy Hammond-driven stuff and nasty Mellotron on just about every track. After relocating to Scandinavia where audiences seemed more receptive to their brand of retro-rock, the same album was released in Sweden with 4 extra tracks. In 2000, they released their first official full-length cd, the highly praised "Money Machine", and have just recently committed their latest assault with the album "Hex", where they concentrate more than ever on the "BLACK SABBATH-with-more-tron" sound. Good, groove-driven stuff that is a true blast from the past.

If you like BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, DEEP PURPLE, URIAH HEEP and KING CRIMSON, you won't be able to help yourself head banging and humming along with these guys' material. Highly recommended..."
